International Women's Day

March 8th is International Women’s Day - a day to celebrate the accomplishments of women and continue to advocate for gender equality. Today, we want to recognize all women who work in transportation and are committed to the advancement of the industry.

Women in Transportation

Despite historical underrepresentation, the presence of women in the transportation industry is growing steadily. Currently, women comprise approximately 24% of the industry’s workforce, a figure that continues to rise.

Women in Transportation (WIT) is an organization dedicated to encouraging employment of women in the trucking industry, promoting their accomplishments, and minimizing obstacles they face within the industry. Through initiatives like the WIT Index, which benchmarks the representation of women in various roles within transportation, strides are being made:

• C-Suite Executives 31.6%
• Company Leaders 36.9%
• Females Serving on Boards of Directors 28.4%
• Women in HR/Talent Management 74.6%
• Women in Technician Roles 7.5%
• Women in Professional Driver Roles 12.1%
• Women in Dispatcher Roles 43.5%
• Women in Safety Roles 41.6%

While these numbers demonstrate progress, it’s essential to acknowledge the ongoing challenges and disparities that women face. Efforts like the recent survey launched by the American Trucking Research Institute demonstrate a commitment to better understanding those challenges. Groups such as Women in Motion Council, which empowers women in transportation and leverages ATA’s resources to influence cultural and policy change, work to eradicate the disparities.

• 50.59% of Transportation team are women
• 52.94% of management roles on the Transportation Team are filled by women
