Infrastructure Matters

During Infrastructure Week 2016, we'd like to remind drivers to slow down and show respect for the roadside construction crews working round the clock to preserve our nation's infrastructure. These individuals put themselves in dangerous situations alongside high-speed traffic on a daily basis. Here are some tips and reminders that are intended to keep everyone safe.
When a worksite involves moving traffic, roadside workers are tasked with protecting the public and themselves from dangerous accidents. In return, it is up to the driver to remain vigilant and cautious while driving in construction zones.
Plan Ahead
As soon as you see a construction sign, slow down to meet the posted legal speed limit and remain vigilant.
In the Zone
Give yourself plenty of time to get in the proper lane. When passing, always check your blind spots and ensure that you can see the vehicle's headlights in your mirrors before pulling back in front of it.
Work to maintain a four-second following distance behind other vehicles. Allow more space and time depending on weather conditions and traffic congestion. Never follow too closely. It takes about 400 feet for a large truck to come to a complete stop.
Expect the Unexpected
Construction workers, work vehicles, or construction equipment may enter your lane without warning. Additionally, other vehicles may slow, stop, or change lanes unexpectedly.
