Staying Fit While You Travel

Getting organized for a trip is hectic enough, but even if your itinerary is jam-packed, sticking with your fitness routine while on the road is easier than you think with the following helpful tips.

Include a workout into your daily itinerary. When looking at your planner for each day, you won't forget about that important hour-long fitness break.

Try to exercise in the morning while traveling. Since days can be extremely long or evening plans can happen at a moment's notice, you'll already have your fitness session out of the way.

Get outside. Exercising outdoors is a great way to see the sights while also staying fit. Ask your hotel concierge for directions to hiking trails, running paths and local parks in the area - and start to explore!

Always pack workout clothes in your suitcase. When packing for a trip, leave room for exercise clothing and fitness gear in your suitcase. With an outfit packed, you can rest assured that you will be prepared to fit in fitness when you get to your destination.

Check out the workout facilities at your hotel or in your destination city. Go online to see what the hotel has to offer in terms of an exercise center. If they have no facility onsite, search for local gyms or running trails. You could also pack a workout DVD and use it on a laptop or portable device in your hotel room.

In the airport, take the long way. Instead of using electronic walkways or escalators, power-walk to your terminal and take the stairs. During a layover, power-walk around the entire airport.

Be flexible. Don't take an "all-or-nothing" approach to working out on your trip. Even if you can't stick to your usual routine, you can still add physical activities to your day, such as standing instead of sitting, taking stretch breaks and using the stairs.

Bring travel-size fitness equipment. Some fitness equipment is small enough and lightweight enough to pack in your suitcase. Bring a jump rope or resistance band, or consider investing in travel weights, which can be filled with sand or water.
