The Difference Between Flood and Water Damage

Are you aware of the risks your home faces from water damage? Many homeowners don’t realize the difference between flood and water damage. Failing to have the appropriate protection in place can be a costly mistake

Did you know?

Water damage claims are:

  • 5x more likely than theft
  • 13x more likely than fire

Make sure you know the difference:

Water Damage | Water damage can happen in any season and often stems from compromised water supply lines, burst pipes, water heater, plumbing or appliance failures.

Steps you can take to reduce the risk of water damage:

  1. Invest in a water shut-off or detection device.
  2. Conduct seasonal inspections of indoor and outdoor water sources.

Flood Damage | According to the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), a flood is a general and temporary condition or partial or complete inundation of two or more acres of normally dry land area or of two or more properties (one of which being yours).

A federal program, TrueNorth can assist clients with obtaining flood protection through the program. Planning is key, as there is typically a 30-day waiting period for an NFIP policy to take effect unless coverage is required by a federally backed lender or related to a community flood map change.

In the event you need to file a claim:

  1. Document the damage.
  2. Get it cleaned up as fast as possible before more damage occurs.
  3. Call your agent to gain guidance in filing a claim.
