Your step-by-step guide to home and auto claims

Life happens, even when we take every proactive measure possible. That’s why we're here. Whether it's a fender bender or a burst pipe, knowing the first steps to take when submitting an insurance claim can make the process smoother and less stressful.

“It’s important to me to be an advocate for my clients and provide knowledge in claims situations.” –Lori Lepich, Senior Account Manager

Here's a quick guide to get you started:

1. Ensure safety first

Home: If there is damage to your home, make sure everyone is safe. If necessary, contact emergency services.

Auto: In the event of an accident, check for injuries and call 911 if needed. Move to a safe location if possible.

2. Document the damage

Home: Take clear photos or videos of the damage. This visual evidence will be crucial for your claim.

Auto: Photograph the accident scene, including all vehicles involved, any visible damage and relevant road conditions.

3. Gather information

Home: Make a list of damaged items and their approximate value. Keep receipts if you have them.

Auto: Exchange contact and insurance information with the other driver(s). Note down the names and contact details of any witnesses.

4. Contact us

Whether it’s for a home or auto loan, our people will guide you in the steps to filing a claim (including if you should even file a claim). In certain cases, it may be better to pay out of pocket to avoid premium increases and carrier review to continue on policy.

“We’re in a hard market right now. Before you file any claim, we need to have a conversation. Let’s say there’s damage to your roof. Get it inspected, see what the damage is, and then call us to explore options because every claim has an impact. A high claim frequency can throw up a flag for nonrenewal.” –Lori Lepich, Senior Account Manager

4. Contact your insurance company

Home: Call your insurance company to report the damage. They will guide you through the next steps.

Auto: Notify your insurance company about the accident. Provide them with all the gathered information and follow their instructions.

5. Prevent further damage

Home: Take reasonable steps to prevent further damage to your property. This might include temporary repairs, like covering a broken window.

Auto: If your vehicle is drivable, take it to a repair shop for an initial assessment. If not, arrange for it to be towed.

6. Keep records

Home: Keep a record of all communications with your insurance company, including dates, times and the names of representatives you speak with.

Auto: Maintain a file with all documents related to the accident and your claim, including police reports, repair estimates and medical bills if applicable.

7. Follow up

Home & Auto: Stay in touch with your insurance company to track the progress of your claim. Don't hesitate to ask questions if you're unsure about any part of the process.

What to do if you're away on vacation

Home & Auto: If you're away when damage occurs, ask a trusted neighbor or friend to check on your property regularly. Contact us and instruct them to follow the steps above until you are able to return home. We will be able to start the claim process on your behalf. Ensure they know how to document any damage.
