Keep your family safe behind the wheel

In 2022 there were 3,308 people killed and nearly 290,000 people injured in traffic crashes involving distracted drivers. Based on the latest data from the U.S. Department of Transportation, distracted driving accounts for:

  • 8% of fatal crashes
  • 12& of injury crashes
  • 11% of all police-reported motor vehicle traffic crashes

Who has the keys to your car?

According to AAA Iowa, we are now in what is considered the 100 deadliest days of the year for teen drivers when nearly half of teen driver-related deaths occur.*

  • Studies show parental restrictions can be vital to preventing teen crashes. Parents should know, enforce and supplement traffic laws by offering additional restrictions and guidance.
  • It’s important to select the safest vehicle for your teen. Avoid small, sporty vehicles and pickups, which offer minimal protection in the event of an accident. Instead, opt for a midsize or larger vehicle equipped with the latest safety technology.
  • Certain insurance carriers offer safe driving apps. When used effectively, these apps can provide premium savings. Contact our team of specialists to see if your family qualifies.

Prioritize safety.

Distracted driving comes in many forms. Put simply, anytime you shift your attention from driving, you're distracted. Scrolling through social media or messaging while driving can be just as dangerous as sending a text.**

As a driver:

  • Activate your phone’s “Do Not Disturb” feature, silence notifications, or put your phone away in the trunk so you won't be tempted to respond.
  • If necessary, appoint a passenger as the “designated texter” to respond to calls or messages.

As a passenger:

  • You are also responsible for limiting distractions and holding the driver accountable. Speak up if you see someone texting and driving and ask them to put their phone away.
  • Be mindful of your phone use, too. Visual and auditory distractions can draw the driver’s attention away from the road.
