FMCSA's Drive for Safer Roads
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has long been at the forefront of ensuring the safety of the nation's roadways. With over 620,000 regulated carriers and millions of vehicles traversing our highways, their task is a fundamental one. However, a numbers problem has persisted over the years, with FMCSA conducting inspections on only around 3 million vehicles annually.
To bridge this gap, they've had to rely on the presence of law enforcement agencies to encourage compliance with the rules, employing various tactics such as:
- Roadside Inspections
- Enforcement Blitzes
- Compliance Reviews
With approximately 12,000 investigations taking place each year, the FMCSA is making strides to use its resources more effectively to identify less safe motor carriers.
