International Roadcheck 2016

Tips to prepare for CVSA's 2016 International Roadcheck

Between Tuesday, June 7th and Thursday, June 9th this year, over 10,000 inspectors across North America will begin the largest targeted enforcement program on commercial motor vehicles in the world: the 2016 Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) International Roadcheck. This is a 72-hour roadside blitz where certified local, state, provincial and federal inspectors will average nearly 17 trucks or buses inspected every minute in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Enforcement officers will be conducting the 37-step North American Standard Level I Inspections looking for any and all violations during 2016 Roadcheck. but this year the focus will be on tire safety.

  • Tires must have at least the minimum required treat depth measured in a major tread groove (4/32 inch for tires on front-axle tires and 2/32 inch for all other tires).
  • More than 4 percent of inspections in 2015 resulted in a tire tread depth violation.

The following chart represents tire-related violations. A driver's pre-trip inspection combined with standard industry maintenance and operational practices should prevent nearly all tire violations, yet tires found flat or with audible air leaks (49 CFR 393.75(a)(3)) represent the most common out-of-service violation.
