What it Takes to Renew Your CDL

Starting yesterday, the new Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration rules concerning Commercial Driver's Licenses (CDL) take effect. The rules were published in 2011 and all states were required to have the processes in place no later than July 8, 2015.

The biggest changes for existing CDL and new CDL drivers will be a few process adjustments that will enhance fraud protection. This would include:

  1. When renewing of testing for a new CDL, drivers will be required to present a certified copy of a birth certificate.
  2. The state licensing agency will be required to verify the driver's social security number with the Social Security Administration.
  3. Drivers will be required to present verification of a home address in their state of license to the state licensing agency.
  4. Using language interpreters will no longer be allowed.

In addition, drivers who are required to take a driving "skills" test will be restricted to the type of vehicle in which they test IF they take the driving test in a truck equipped with an automatic transmission or if they test in a pickup truck and heavy duty trailer. A driver testing to obtain a Class "B" CDL will be required to test in a straight truck. Testing for a Class "B" CDL in a semi-tractor will no longer be allowed.

Please visit the FMCSA website for more information on applying for a Commerical Drivers License. If you have any questions about this or other CDL processes, please contact your state government DOT.
